UK Penis Study Methods and Results

The UK study^† focused on collecting data for three particular penile measurements:

• flaccid pendulous length
• flaccid penopubic length
• stretched flaccid penopubic length

Flaccid Pendulous Length
This type of length measurement is calculated while the penis is in a non-erect state. According to the findings, the average flaccid pendulous length was established to be 8.7 cm (3.43 inches).

Flaccid Penopubic Length
The difference between this type of measurement and the previous one is the location of where the actual measuring begins. For penopubic length, the measurement starts at the pubic arch instead of where the penis protrudes from the body (some of the penis shaft is actually hidden within the body). The average penopubic length was calculated as 10.2 cm (4.02 inches).

Stretched Flaccid Penopubic Length
This is performed exactly like the preceding technique except the penis is physically stretched before the measurement is taken. Average stretched flaccid length was recorded as 14.3 cm (5.63 inches).

While this study lacks critical information regarding erect penis size – a measurement that men and woman are typically more interested in – it still represents a valuable collection of data not easily obtained given the sensitive nature of the research itself. If you're like most men then the thought of earning some money for your sperm has probably crossed your mind at least once or twice. My interest was recently renewed while watching an episode of "The Colbert Report" in which Stephen (the host) did a comedy bit about the recent Australian sperm shortage. You can watch the entire segment in this hilarious clip.

All comedy aside, Stephen reports that some Australian clinics are paying over $700 per vial of American sperm. Obviously that's some serious money being shelled out for those little swimmers! At that price, and with a little help from some semen volumizer supplements*, I figured that any man could be well on their way to retirement in just a few short years.

Before quitting my job and becoming a full-time sperm donor I decided to do a little research into the sperm donation business. What I discovered was a little bit disheartening. It seems as though my retirement will have to wait.

Standard Criteria for Sperm Donation

In order to begin the process, an initial consultation is required to determine the suitability of the sperm donor. While each clinic has its own individual requirements, the following standard criteria are those generally used to pre-qualify sperm donors.

Age Requirement:
The sperm donor must be between the ages of 18 to 34 (the cryogenically preserved sperm of young males is more durable than that of older men).

Height Requirement:
The donor must be at least 5'11 inches or taller (most women want to have tall children).

Weight Requirement:
The donors weight should be appropriate for his height (it is believed that sperm health is directly associated with body weight).

Education Requirement:
Donors should have a high school diploma or preferably a college degree (socio-economics meets genetics).

Medical Health Requirement:
Donors must have a clean medical record with no history of disease (this includes syphilis, chlamydia, hepatitis B or C, HIV, genital herpes, venereal warts or other diseases).

Sperm Analysis

If the previous requirements are met, several tests are then performed to determine the health of the sperm itself. It is estimated that between 50-90% of all applicants are rejected because of a deficiency in one or more of the following areas.

Sperm Count:
Measures the concentration of sperm in a man's ejaculate (anything over 20 million sperm per milliliter is considered normal).

Sperm Motility:
Determines how well the sperm swim ("normal motility" is generally defined as 50-60% of observed sperm cells showing good forward movement).

Sperm Morphology:
This refers to the form, structure and configuration of the sperm (the definition of "normal morphology" varies but a sample is considered normal if anywhere between 14-30% or more of the observed sperm have normal morphology).

Sperm Durability:
This is the measure of how well the sperm reacts to being frozen and thawed (some sperm samples are more resilient to the freezing process than others).

Family Medical History and Full Exam

After having successfully passed the preceding requirements the next step is to evaluate your family medical history. In some instances this may require the disclosure of your family's full medical background going back as far as 4 generations.

Once family background screening is passed, a full medical exam consisting of an assortment of various tests is then performed. This includes semen analysis, urinalysis, determining blood type (ABO-Rh), full blood count (FBC), carrier screening for cystic fibrosis and sickle cell and other diseases. Even if you pass this barrage of tests, you should then be prepared for follow up tests which occur every 3 months.

Contractual Obligations

If you've managed to pass all the tests and are approved to become a sperm donor then the only thing left to do is sign a contract. This contract includes several legal stipulations that must be met.

Legal Responsibility:
Sperm donors have no legal responsibility for any children produced using their sperm. They also have no rights to the child and will remain anonymous in accordance with state law. This particular stipulation varies however as noted in the aforementioned Australian sperm shortage controversy. According to a new Australian law, all sperm donors must agree to provide identifying information so that the child can contact them once they reach the age of 18.

Time/Health Commitment:
Donors must commit to the program for a period of 6 months to 3 years. Your responsibility during this time includes maintaining good heath and notifying the clinic if you suspect that you've contracted a disease.

Abstinence Clause:
In accordance with the contract, sperm donors must remain abstinent for at least 5 days prior to making a deposit. This means no sex or masturbation which results in ejaculation.

Progeny Limitation:
Donors are only allowed up to 10 children produced from their sperm. Once this number is reached the sperm donor is then retired from the market.

Sperm Donors – A Select Group

As you can see, becoming a sperm donor is not as easy as you may have first thought. The entire qualification process can take between 6 weeks to 6 months and involves significant testing. Also keep in mind that less than 5% of all applicants are approved to become sperm donors.

While there are financial rewards for those that qualify, the actual amount will differ from one sperm bank to the next. If you're interested in becoming a donor and believe that you'll meet all the strict requirements then you should talk to your doctor who can refer you to a state certified clinic.

For me, the prospect of exchanging sperm for cash was short-lived. Unfortunately I fall short of meeting several of the criteria such as the age and height requirements. It would appear that my career as a sperm donor will have to be restricted to the bedroom!

Kinsey Condom Survey

The study^† which consisted of a survey taken by the Kinsey Institute for Research in Sex, Gender and Reproduction, questioned 436 men about how their condoms fit when used during sex. Of these men, almost 45 percent reported that the condom fit poorly and complained of condom slippage, breaking and irritation of the penis.

Another complaint was that condoms made intercourse less pleasurable and resulted in greater difficulty in achieving orgasm. For this reason, many stated that they took off the condoms before they finished having sex. This behavior obviously exposes men to sexually-contracted diseases and ultimately defeats the entire purpose of using condoms in the first place.

The researchers who conducted this survey concluded:

"Men and their female sex partners may benefit from public health efforts designed to promote the improved fit of condoms."

What's Size Got To Do, Got To Do With It?

Although the researchers conclusion offers sound advice, it does beg the question of why condom makers seem oblivious to the needs of their customers. With so much emphasis on developing pleasure-producing male contraceptives, and recent strives to educate men on the importance of safe-sex, it appears almost counter-intuitive to manufacture products that don't even fit well.

Clearly the root of the problem stems out of two specific circumstances. Firstly, many men have no idea whatsoever the condom size they'll actually need. It's not like you can go into a store and try on condoms until you find one that matches. Since penises come in all shapes and sizes, it's not always easy to determine which condom will offer the correct fit.

Secondly, while there is a dizzying array of condom varieties (ribbed, lubricated, scented, flavored, colored, etc.), the actual selection of sizes is limited. The majority of brands are marketed in Regular, Large and Extra Large sizes – you'd be hard-pressed to find a condom that is labeled 'Small.'

This predicament usually results in men guessing about which size is right for them. Unfortunately this means that sometimes the condom is too small and this can cause discomfort or breakage. Other times the condom is too large and either becomes loose or simply falls off.

Getting Condom Size Right

The only true way to be sure that a condom fits correctly is to buy a sample of different sizes and test each one independently. Since condoms are often purchased in the spur of the moment, this might not always be practical or even possible.

Even if you find a condom that does fit, this won't account for variable changes in penis size that may occur over time. If you're practicing a penis enlargement method for instance, you'll need to periodically check that the condoms you're using are still fitting properly.

The bottom line is that unless you're in a committed sexual relationship with a partner you trust, condoms are a necessity. If the possibility of pregnancy and/or the contraction of STIs (sexually transmitted infections) is not an issue then you may not have to worry. For many men however, condoms are a way of life. Until condom manufacturers come up with a better and more transparent system for sizing, the burden remains on us alone to make the right choice.

Women and Penis Size

If you want to know a woman's preference when it comes to penis size, you could always just ask. She may of course simply tell you whatever it is that she thinks you want to hear. To learn how she truly feels would require presenting her with actual options and then gauging her response.

Although in real life this isn't an easy task to accomplish, there is a popular online medium that would allow us to conduct this type of experiment. The Experiment

Stage One – Creating a Profile

Being an adult community, members were allowed (even encouraged) to upload personal images to share with other users. I proceeded to add two pictures to my profile, one of my penis while flaccid and another while erect. The total amount of activity on my profile increased by about 500% with that simple inclusion! Results and Conclusion

Towards the end of this 4 month experiment I gradually reverted my profile back to it's original state. I removed the photos and the particulars of my penis size measurements. Those actions resulted in a decline of profile views and a subsequent loss of interest in my person.

Penis Size and "Popular Opinion"

If you've watched this ad then you may have noticed that when the condom is (supposedly) rolled on, the penis to which it is applied is enormous in size – almost ridiculously so! I know that mimes have a penchant for exaggeration but the size of that penis would put almost any man to shame.

The Sandwich/Size Wars

Another example of somewhat less obvious reference to penis size is apparent in what I like to call the "Sandwich Wars." This is the ongoing battle between fast-food giants Subway, Quiznos and most recently, Burger King.

Five dollar foot long? Unless you've been living under a rock, you've no doubt heard this catchy slogan before. I find it interesting how they emphasize the importance of size – complete with a few attractive women holding up their arms to illustrate length.

Not to be outdone, Quiznos quickly followed with their own "four dollar" foot long campaign. This commercial features a talking oven that wants Scott (the employee) to "put it in me." Disturbing really.

While the examples mentioned above might be considered subtle, Burger King has absolutely abandoned all efforts at discretion. Entertainment Weekly did a nice article on the Burger King Ad complete with a picture of the actual advertisement. Super seven incher? Are they selling a sandwich, a penis or the promise of oral sex? I can't tell.

HUNG – A New HBO Series

If you can't guess what the new HBO show entitled "Hung" is about, I'll give you a hint… think Large Penis. Ok, that's probably more then a hint. The lead role is played by a man who is exceptionally well endowed and decides to essentially market his "tool" for money.
