man masturbatingFor many years the act of masturbating carried negative connotations. It has often been thought of as something performed only by lonely or desperate people or those of weak moral fiber. Even today many people feel proud of the fact that they do not masturbate even when they have gone without sex for an extended period of time. Most people however have no idea how beneficial this solitary sexual practice is for the physical and psychological health of both men and women.

Often people who are engaged in an otherwise healthy relationship, matched with both common interests and lifestyles, do not share the same views when it comes to sex. One partner may have a more active libido and prefer more frequent intimate encounters, while the other just does not have as strong a passion about the sex act. In such cases, masturbation is an excellent way to help maintain balance within the relationship. The person who has a stronger sex drive can satisfy their desires without making the less eager partner feel uncomfortable and self-conscious.

Pleasuring oneself is also an excellent way for those denied normal sexual relief to get rid of tension. Many psychologists agree that masturbation is very effective at relieving depression. Experiencing a powerful orgasm can both lift your spirits and drive away negative thoughts.

Furthermore, frequent masturbation helps a person understand his or her own sexual desires and is a very good way of exploring one's sexuality. For young people or shy people who are nervous about the act of sex, the self-knowledge gained from masturbation can be a great asset later on in life to help make intercourse a more pleasurable experience. Masturbation is also perfectly safe for people of all ages and, unlike sex, it does not carry the risk of unwanted pregnancies or sexually transmitted diseases.

Recently, studies have even suggested that frequent masturbation in men may help to decrease the risk of developing prostate cancer. While these findings are by no means proven, the possibility of preventing such a prevalent disease through the very common activity of masturbating holds great promise. While no one has actually gone far enough to suggest that masturbation will prevent cancer, the act itself is still beneficial in many ways and should never be thought of as something to be ashamed of or embarrassed by.

i heard that masturbation can make you pinus smaller if done to much whats your answer to this i realy would like to know.thanks

Hi Rob,

There is absolutely no relation between penis size and masturbating. There are lots of myths regarding masturbation and that is probably one of the most common.

Some other popular myths include that it will make you lose your eyesight, lose your hair or make hair grow on your palms... none of these have any basis in fact.

Another thing that many people believe is that excessive masturbation will make a man run out of semen. That couldn't be further from the truth either. Even into old age a normal male's testicles are still capable of producing semen.

As mentioned in the article, the act of masturbating has long been frowned upon. Myths are often created as an attempt to dissuade someone from doing something perceived to be bad (many times under the guise of religion). Masturbation, however, is both natural and normal for both sexes.

Hello PRS. You tell rob that masturbation is fine. You are wrong.

Masturbation will cause a person to become blind and crippled, as well as causing or aggravating many other health problems.

It is very easy to prove this. People who masturbate too much will show very obvious physical changes to their bodies. One of the more obvious changes caused by masturbation that can be seen by the untrained eye is uneven shoulders. The shoulders of a person who masturbates will not be level. The shoulder of the masturbating hand will usually be lower than the other shoulder. Go look in the mirror. Or watch some pornography to verify this.

Doctors are boneheads. Really. You cannot trust what they say. Trust your own two eyes and your own brain to make decisions.

Borisp (Borat?),

What you are saying is just plain ridiculous. If it were true, the large majority of the world's population would be suffering from the health problems you mentioned. This is obviously not the case. I suppose "excessive masturbation" (however you define that) might lead to some skin irritation on the penis... but using some lubrication should take care of that straight away! ;-)

I have to agree that masturbation can be hazardous to one's health. I once sprained my wrist, I jerked off so hard.LOL

Thanks Eric, I stand corrected! Readers please learn from Eric's incident and don't work it so hard... or at the very least, switch between hands every so often! lol

I don't think there is anything wrong in masturbation. Your body is going to get rid of the sperm one way or another. Your testicals will contunue to make sperm cells and if the body dosn't get rid of it then you will have a "Wet Dream". Your best to enjoy it while your awake, right? As for religious freaks, they would frown on pooping if they can make people feel scard of it. I think masturbation should be done everyday. I don't get why men would feel ashame to jerk off, its really natural. I'm sorry that most parents are too scard to even talk about it, educate thier kids about masturbation and sex. I learn about sex when I was young. When I asked my mom where babies come from, she didn't say that a stork brought me to her. She told me that my daddys sperm invaded her egg and made me. She even told me how a sperm cell comes out of a mans penis by masturbation. The only danger of masturbation is overdoing it. Too much of anything is dangerous. You get hairy palms if you grab on to your pubic hairs. You get sore eyes when you watch your hands going up and down in fast motion. And the only way you lose your hair is when you get stressed out by not masturbating. (Or genes) You shouldn't be ashame because you masturbate. It's no more degrading then pissing or pooping. And it's as natural as eating and breathing. And no, your penis won't shrink. Believe me. I think that a small penis is caused by poor blood circulation. And a poor diet. I also believe that impotance is caused by abusing the testicals and the penis shaft. I think men should be the ones to wear skirks because we need cool air on our testicles. That is why men have our testicles outside of our bodies.

You obviously have no idea what you are talking about. You are giving your personal opinions. "I think people should masturbate everyday". That is just a foolish kind of remark that an unthinking person makes.

You are wrong about the penis changing size. The penis will change shape and size as a result of masturbation. The change may be large or small. It depends. You all know what I say is true if you ever looked at pictures of a penis. You ever see a penis that rotates about it's center and points off in some weird direction? That is not natural. Masturbation can cause those kinds of changes to the penis.

Robert, I regret to say you sound like a lunatic. You write chaotically as your thoughts jump from here to there. You sound hysterical in some places and nonsensical in others.

I understand you may have strong personal feelings about masturbation, but you are wrong. If you want to be wrong that is OK. But you should not go around telling other people to believe your wrong information. You are encouraging people to develop health problems.

I know that is not what you want.

Well it seems the controversy regarding masturbation continues. I've added a new poll to this post (right hand column) to see where our readers stand on this issue. Please take a second to cast your vote!

While I do appreciate the lively feedback we've received, I ask that those leaving comments try to keep the conversation civil. All posts are open to comment and while not everyone agrees, please try to respect the opinions of others.

I think the poll is actually polling 'Have scientists and the media convinced you that masturbation is healthy?"

A better poll question would be "How much time have you given to thinking about the consequences of masturbation?"

or

"How much time have you spent on your own studying whether masturbation is harmful or healthy?"

or

"After WMD in Iraq, why do you still believe what the media tells you? They lied about Iraq, so why do you believe they are telling the truth about masturbation?"

borisp,

I appreciate the personal thoughts that you have contributed. I would however like to keep everything on topic. This is not the place for comments regarding political/military policy. There are plenty of other blogs for you to discuss such things if you feel so inclined. Thank you.

That has got to be the weakest reason to try to chase someone away I have every seen. One sentence in a post to make a point is not a "discussion" of anything. It is using an example to make a point.

;)

I am 14 year old and I have a bent penis or curved penis. I masturbat 3 times a week. I think its normal to masturbat. I started to masturbat a year ago. My penis was curved compleatly to the right, but now it is half the way. Who have exactly my problem, start to masturbating now!

10x for your suggegments PRS.

Obviously there is a certain individual, Borisp, who is taken by the idea that masturbation causes anything more than and orgasm and for men, ejaculation, when in reality, the only palpable proven effects are linked to psychology, and actually many researches have been led to believe those effects are positive. Except in the rare case of addiction, where one forgoes participation in society in favor of masturbation, a majority of the population enjoys a healthy and regular habit of masturbation, without any of the negative effects he sights. Borisps negative side-effects are common myths and have little or no grounding in scientific evidence, and only relate to males. What say you to regular female masturbation? Anything wrong with that?

The rise in sexsomnia proves we aren't having enough sex, although we like to brag we are. Orgasm is needed for health. Research says it must even be “frequent” to prevent prostate cancer in men. I'm a big advocate of masturbation and I encourage my boyfriends to masturbate as often as they can. I even find it a turn on.

I'm a guy and I masturbate about 5-8 times a day depending on my mood and regardless if I'm in a relationship or not. Though I usually tire much sooner if I have a girlfriend at that time. I refuse to date girls with disimilar libidos and I have suffered no serious physical side effects from frequent masturbation. I have "jerked it raw" on occasion and I've done the same thing from having intercourse too frequently. I have had no loss of vision as is annually confirmed during my pilot's physical. I have had no strange outgrowths of hair on any surface of my body. No bending of my penis, not loss of size or gain and if anything, I feel great every day. I don't advocate skipping out on every day activities to rub one out, but it certainly can do no harm.

My partners have also expressed that I am more manageable when I've masturbated a few times a day.

The previous post concerning bent shafts is related to naturally occurring conditions that affect many men. It is not life threatening or dangerous to ones health and has nothing to do with masturbation.

This article was written with scientific backing as evidence. For nay-sayers preaching immorality, I would love to see your argument and supporting evidence. "I heard" isn't sufficient and isn't worth stressing out the individuals who have a genuine interest in the subject.

To guys and girls, do what's best for you. Exploring one's sexuality via masturbation is the only safe way to release without risk of pregnancy or STDs so enjoy yourselves and just like anything else, don't perform to excess. Cheers

Capt J. G.

What do you think of a man that has his wife masturbate him because her vagina is so dry that it hurts to have intercourse. But she likes to do it to me while I rub her while she does it. She says she prefers it that way now.

Hi Charlie,

Having your wife provide the stimulation isn't technically masturbation, but it's definitely fun! If she enjoys pleasuring you in that manner then there's absolutely nothing wrong with it.

In regards to painful intercourse, vaginal dryness is a condition that does affect many women. There are a number of reasons why this happens including reduced estrogen levels or allergic reactions to certain medications. It's also believed that douching can cause this condition since cleaning the vagina disrupts its normal chemical balance and can cause inflammation.

The only real way to diagnose her condition is of course by visiting a doctor. In the meantime you may want to experiment with some natural lubricants such as Durex. This will help to keep the vagina moist and minimize any discomfort experienced during sex.

I have always enjoyed masturbating my boyfriends. All gals should be comfortable with this if they want their men to be strong ejaculators, last long during intercourse, and stay healthy. I found out early that guys are just not in tune enough with their bodies to even know they need to ejaculate again. He'll say he doesn't feel the need but then we are both always surprised how much come he'll shoot out and how urgent and good it feels with my helping hand. This is our ritual earlier in the day on those days we plan to have intercourse later. That's usually every day. It helps him last longer in me. Later in the day, if we can't get together for intercourse, he'll masturbate for me to keep fit. I believe that there is no better measure of a man's desire for someone than a powerful and plentiful ejaculation. That is desire you can't hide or deny. Therefore, any gal should do all she can to enhance this in her man.

Respected sir,

I have a problem with my penis, its turn on one side (bend).I masturbate 2 times in week, please give answer of my problem if any medicine recover my penis.I am living in kingdom of Saudi arabia.

with Thanks
haider

Hello Haider,

Having a slight bend in the penis is fairly common. If it's a more extreme curve then you may wish to try some exercises designed to straighten the penis. I suggest joining the PenisHealth exercise program which can teach you how to perform specific techniques to help make the penis both straighter and larger.

The program is very effective and also inexpensive ($54.95). It also comes with a full 6 month money back guarantee if you aren't satisfied with your results. I believe that using this system of exercises may help improve your condition greatly.

Your site is so helpful and gives the unvarnished truth, no matter how uncomfortable. Since I first discovered it in 2007, it's encouraged me and so many others to cast aside our doubts and masturbate often. It's years later now and I confirmed what say about the facts of the benefits published in medical journals verses the myths which continue to float around, unfounded. The U.K. has since even issued a health pamphlet stressing the importance of ejaculating at least once a day. Early and frequent ejaculation is so necessary for health and sexual development and masturbation is the best way to ensure this.
