clean soapKeeping good personal hygiene is important to maintaining overall health. Since the sex organs are more sensitive than other parts of the body and frequently involved in intimate contact, good sexual hygiene and keeping the penis clean is extremely important. Practicing good sexual hygiene is very easy and only involves a few minutes of time each day.

For uncircumcised men, cleaning the penis should be done by starting at the tip of the penis and pulling the foreskin back as far as possible in order to expose the glans. Gently wash both the glans and the inner part of the foreskin with lukewarm water. Remember that the penis is one of the most sensitive parts of the male body so make sure you don't use water that is too hot. Take care to clean the area between the glans and the foreskin as this is the area where the white substance known as smegma forms.

Smegma consists of skin oils, dead epithelial cells shed by the tissues of the penis, accumulated moisture and bacteria. Because bacteria thrives in isolated warm places with plenty of moisture, it is very important to keep the area under the foreskin free of debris. A build up of bacteria and dead tissue cells under the foreskin will produce a very pungent and not at all pleasant odor. There is also a greater likelihood of infection in an area of accumulated sweat, dirt and bacteria.

Men that are circumcised must also pay close attention to personal hygiene. Many doctors believe that removing the protective foreskin leaves the glans exposed to various bacteria that cause infections of the urinary tract. Others maintain that the foreskin essentially traps smegma and dirt and so actually increases the risk of infection.

While this ongoing debate as to whether removing the foreskin is actually more hygienic continues, the fact that the penis must be kept clean of debris is without question. Practicing good sexual hygiene will keep your penis healthy and ensure that your sexual relationships do not suffer.
