Kama Sutra DrawingProbably the best known of all love guides is the Kama Sutra. This manual was originally written in Sanskrit by a man named Vatsyayana. Kama Sutra comes from the words Kama meaning desire and Sutra meaning rules. Adapted from a long history of rich oral tradition, the Kama Sutra was translated by an intrepid adventurer, Sir Richard Burton, for the benefit of the English-speaking world.

The Kama Sutra contains over one thousand slokas (verses) that discuss the spiritual aspects of sexuality and details many sexual positions and techniques for enhancing the enjoyment of sex. It includes information about the art of seduction, courting, gift giving, kissing, preparation and use of aphrodisiacs, and the moral and ethical attitudes during marriage.

Ancient Hindus believed that life had three purposes: religious piety (Dharma), material success (Artha), and sexual pleasure (Kama). All three were considered equal, and the erotic was celebrated as the seat of earthly beauty.

The Kama Sutra was not only created as a guide to heighten sexual pleasure, it was designed to teach mastery of the senses and ultimately raise spiritual consciousness.

Below are just a few of the different sexual positions contained in the Kama Sutra. Most are named after animals and nature which reflects man's relationship with the natural world. In some of the techniques below the penis is referred to as the lingam, while the vagina is called the yoni.

The Missionary Position
This is the most common sexual position used. The woman lies on her back with her legs parted and the man places himself on top and between her legs where he can initiate penetration. Cushions can be added under the woman's buttocks to change to angle of penetration and allow for deeper penetration.

The Bee Position
The man is in a seated position with his legs outstretched and the woman sits on his lingam with her feet drawn up. She can then revolve her hips so that the man's lingam circles deep inside her yoni. He can arch his body or lift her buttocks or thighs to accompany her movements.

The Lotus Position
The woman lies on her back as the man, sitting facing her, fastens her ankles around his neck. She grips her toes as she presents her well-opened yoni to her partner.

The Deer Position
The woman goes on all fours and straightens her back. The man kneels down and penetrates her from behind.

The Tortoise Position
The woman lies on top of the man with her legs open allowing his lingam to slide inside her yoni. Once in place, they both straighten their legs, rubbing their bodies laterally and horizontally against each other.

The Elephant Position
The woman lies down so that the man can enter her from behind. She can leave her legs open for easier penetration, or tighten her thighs to firmly squeeze his lingam in her yoni.

The Swing Position
The man lies down on his back while the woman turns her back to him and crouches down on his lingam with her legs on either side of his hips.

The Dog Position
A classic position when the woman is bent over on all fours with her chin resting on her crossed arms. The man, kneeling, grips her waist and enters her from behind.

The Wheel Position
The man and woman start in the classic Missionary Position. The man rotates slowly on his partner using his lingam as the axis of rotation until he has come back to his initial position.
