• The rates of three known risk factors – smoking, obesity and diabetes.
• The percentage of the male population that performs regular exercise.
• The number of urologists per capita.

This is nothing more than a poorly disguised attempt to create a sense of distrust and uncertainty amongst consumers about exercising their own judgment on nutritional matters. And it's been going on for some time now. The wealthy pharmaceutical companies have grown increasingly alarmed over the years about growing holistic health trends.

Some of you may remember the controversy surrounding tryptophan, a naturally occurring substance found in turkey. When tryptophan began to cut into the pharmaceutical industry's highly profitable sleeping pill business, they made a move to have it declared illegal and taken off the market completely. The problem is, it's also naturally found in breast milk. Would they like to place a ban on breast feeding as well?

"People should get all the vitamins and minerals they need from their diet, but for the millions who are not able to do that, vitamins can be a useful supplement and they should not stop taking them."

This statement is true enough, taken at face value. But how many of us actually follow a healthy balanced diet rich in vitamins, minerals and antioxidants. I recently found an article over on MSN Health & Fitness entitled "Natural Viagra: Is it safe?" After reading that, I have to admit that I was a little surprised by the obvious bias expressed in the article.

The subheading to the article was So-called "herbal viagra" products are not the same as prescription Viagra. Well duh. The obvious differences include:

• Viagra is chemically manufactured in a laboratory.
• Viagra requires a prescription.
• Viagra costs a small fortune.

The article goes on to talk about the "rigorous standards" applied to prescription medicine and how herbal products are unsafe and possibly dangerous. Well a quick search on google will return far more results regarding side effects and law suits against the manufacturers of pharmaceutical products than all natural herbal products combined.

Inevitably, the article mentions yohimbe as a popular and dangerous herbal product. That's no surprise since the dangers of that particular herb have been plastered over and over again all over the net. Hell, there's even a page on Penis-Resources dedicated to the particular dangers (see Dangers of Yohimbe).

While no one will argue that some herbs like yohimbe can have negative side effects, in all honesty there's pretty much nothing that can't harm you if you consume it in large quantities. Think water is good for you? Try drinking too much of it in a short period of time and see what happens.

I have to admit that the entire article kind of pissed me off. Sure, there's lots of herbal products for erectile problems that are absolutely bogus. But from reading that article the average reader would think that the only thing that can possibly work is Viagra. I guess I shouldn't have been surprised… advertisements for Viagra are plastered all over the page!

Having tried and tested many different products myself, I know that there are legitimate and natural ways to enhance erections and improve libido. There's reviews and comparisons all over this site to testify to this.

I'm no conspiracy nut, but it leaves me wondering just how much the medical community actually cares about people. I'm not naive… I know it's a business after all. If there's no money in it then why should the pharmaceutical juggernaut give a damn.

I guess part of me likes to hope that the medical community puts people ahead of profit. That finding cures will actually be more important than making money. I won't be holding my breath. In the meantime I plan on finding natural alternatives to prescription drugs and letting others know of my experiences.

"A major reason is that men who take drugs that contain nitrates, such as nitroglycerin for chest pain, should not take Viagra, because serious complications can occur. A warning notice about that is included on Viagra's label, but doctors also tell patients about the risk, said Jason Napodano, an analyst at Zacks Independent Research."

"You can't trust patients to read the label," Napodano said.

Funny but true. Just imagine all the men who would be popping penis pills like they were candy and running around with erections all day! That is, until they ended up in the emergency room.

Also imagine just how much more money the manufacturers would rake in…

"For the nine months ended in September, Viagra sales fell 1 percent to $1.2 billion."

Poor Pfizer… only $1.2 billion? They must be ready to go out of business! Seriously though, can you believe how much money men shell out for Viagra and other related prescription drugs like Cialis? Maybe it's just modern society's "drugs are the answer" mentality that makes men spend thousands on pills to make their dicks hard. Whatever the reason, it's undeniable that the big pharmaceutical companies pretty much run the show.

What's sad is that companies that provide natural enhancement products which produce many of the same benefits as Viagra are rarely ever heard of. It's true that they aren't magic pills that give you an instant erection, but I'll take a longer term natural and safe solution over a dangerous prescription drug any day of the week!
