The inability to achieve or sustain an erection suitable for sexual intercourse, otherwise known as Erectile Dysfunction (ED), is a condition that is estimated to affect over 18 million men in the U.S. alone. While much research has been done in recent years to determine the underlying causes of erection problems, there has been little evidence to support a direct link between this condition and the size of a penis – that is, until now. A new study suggests that there may in fact be a direct correlation between penis size and erectile dysfunction.

Case Study

A study† recently published in the Journal of Sexual Medicine was conducted to determine the average stretched penis size in normal men compared with that of patients suffering from erectile dysfunction. The test group consisted of over one thousand subjects from a hospital outpatient clinic and contained both potent males and those suffering with ED. Using a tape measure and ruler, both penile length and girth in the fully stretched states were measured to determine average size.

Results

In the group of normal men with no symptoms of ED, it was determined that the average fully stretched length was 12.9 cm (+/- 1.9 cm) and the fully stretched girth was 8.9 cm (+/- 0.9 cm). In the group with ED patients, the average fully stretched penis length was 11.2 cm (+/- 1.5 cm) and fully stretched girth was 8.8 cm (+/- 0.8 cm).

Using the data compiled it can be seen that while girth measurements between the two groups were fairly consistent (only a 0.1 cm difference), the length differential was quite pronounced. Those men not suffering from erectile dysfunction were approximately 1.7 cm larger – or nearly .67 inches longer in size. These statistics suggest that men with ED tend to have significantly shorter penises than those without erection problems.

†Source: Comparing Penile Measurements in Normal and ED Subjects

Why Do Men with ED have Shorter Penises?

While the researchers themselves offer no suggestions as to why this discrepancy in size exists, I suspect it is tied to both physical and psychological reasons.

Physiologically speaking, the penis tends to shrink in size when it is not functioning properly. Without adequate and regular blood flow to the muscles, veins and arteries in and near the corpora cavernosa, the surrounding tissues of the penis breakdown and atrophy.

From a psychological perspective, this condition is further compounded as men who suffer from erectile dysfunction tend to avoid sexual intercourse and the necessary stimulation it provides. In essence they lack the motivation to have sex (understandably due to their condition) and therefore the penis is not stimulated on a regular basis. In other words, use it or lose it.

The findings from this study only helps to reinforce the importance of maintaining proper penis heath. Through proper exercise and the use of certified devices to treat ED, not only can men avoid problems like erectile dysfunction, they can also ensure that the size of their penis remains uncompromised.

Most people falsely assume that erectile dysfunction (ED) is a condition that only affects older men. While it's true that it does tend to become more prevalent with aging, this in no way rules out it's occurrence in men who are much younger. As a matter of fact, I personally experienced issues with ED when I was only in my early 20's. Although the cause of this condition can vary from one man to the next, there does exist both natural remedies and pharmaceutical treatments that can help to combat the problem.

A Symptom of the Mind or Body?

The source of erectile dysfunction disorders generally stems from two states, the psychological and the physiological condition. It is commonly thought that the primary basis for problems among younger men lies with psychological/mental issues; this is known as psychogenic ED. Older men with erectile dysfunction often have their problem attributed to actual biological functions, a condition called vasculogenic ED.

Generalized assumptions regarding the age of men and erectile dysfunction are not always correct however. For example, in one particular 5-year multi-institutional study recently published by BJU International, it was concluded:

"ED in teenagers should not be routinely categorized as psychogenic without an adequate vascular evaluation, as a significant percentage have abnormal erectile haemodynamics consistent with vasculogenic ED."

In other words, younger men can in fact suffer from the condition due to actual physical traits and not purely psychological issues. Ultimately, only a qualified physician will be able to determine the root cause.

Treatments: Pharmaceutical Drugs vs. Natural Therapy

In recent years, prescribed medicine has become the favored treatment for ED disorders. While pharmaceutical solutions such as Viagra and Cialis continue to grow in popularity, it should be understood that this method of treatment is not without risks. Most prescription drugs have many unwanted side effects including irregular heartbeat, headaches, nausea, runny or stuffy nasal passages, chest pains, and vision impairment.

As we start to better understand the true implications associated with a reliance on prescribed drugs, the futility of such short term solutions is becoming more and more apparent. Even traditional western medicine is beginning to embrace alternative natural treatment such as erectile dysfunction exercises (see Case Study on Pelvic Floor Exercises).

The specific exercise techniques used in natural erection therapy are far superior to ED drug treatment on a number of levels. Not only are they easy to perform and suitable for all age groups, their effects are also long term. Pills cannot technically be called a true solution since they only help for a short while. When Viagra is flushed from the system, the problem still continues to exist.

Erectile dysfunction can effectively become a thing of the past once a man has learned to gain control over his erection. This is possible since the body itself is strengthened and the root of the problem directly addressed. Although it does not work as quickly as popping a pill might, it also has no dangerous side effects either. The bottom line is the choice between a natural, safe and effective solution and a quick fix that's not really a solution at all.

The Natural Solution for Men of All Ages

While the exercises are not difficult to master, it is vital that you first learn how to properly perform them. I suggest a professional program such as the one supplied by PenisHealth. A typical workout routine requires less then 10 minutes per day to complete. These techniques have also been proven to actually enlarge both the length and thickness of the penis when performed regularly. Compared with ED drugs, it's also a very inexpensive way to solve erection problems.

Whether young or old, men of all ages can and will at some point experience problems with erections. Many might feel ashamed of their condition and be hesitant to discuss the problem with their doctor. You can however fix the problem naturally if you are willing to work towards a solution. The decision is entirely up to you.

Join the PenisHealth program today and get started on the road to a bigger, stronger and healthier penis!

Millions of men around the world suffer from weak and small erections. In recent years a greater awareness of this problem has led to a boom in pharmaceutical drugs like Viagra and Cialis. Unfortunately these erectile dysfunction medications provide only temporary relief and are not, in and of themselves, a true cure. Effectively fighting impotence over the long-term means understanding that the penis needs to be naturally stimulated in order to remain vibrant and healthy.

A phrase that occasionally comes to mind when discussing penis related problems is, "use it or lose it." Like other parts of the body, the penis tends to shrink and atrophy when it is not being used. The obvious paradox here is that those with erection problems are not getting adequate stimulation as a direct result of this problem. Trying to have sex more often is usually neither practical nor, in many cases, even possible.

While this is somewhat of a dilemma, there is no reason why men cannot themselves increase the healthy functioning of their own penises through methods of erection therapy. In basic terms, this simply means manually stimulating the penis on a regular basis using specially designed techniques.

Erection therapy, however, should not be confused with masturbation. While there are some masturbation techniques that can help teach better control, such as edging, the practices we are referring to here are not for self-pleasure but rather exercises designed to promote better penile functioning.

One of the primary goals of this type of therapy is to improve circulation within the penis and increase the overall volume of blood that is held within the erectile tissue. It is after all the engorgement of blood within these tissues that is directly responsible for producing the erect state.

In addition to creating a better circulatory environment and healthier erectile tissues, the surrounding musculature also needs to be enhanced. The pubococcygeus muscle (PC muscle) for example plays a vital role in erection control. This muscle can be strengthened and trained in order to increase the duration that erections can be maintained.

Other muscles, such as the bulbo-cavernous and ischio-cavernous, are directly related to the structure and thickness of the penis. These two sheets of muscle wrap around the shaft of the penis much like the belts on a radial tire. When pumped and contracted they add rigidity and thickness to the penile shaft. Just as with any other voluntary muscles, these can be exercised and both their strength and size improved.

Incorporating a program of penis enhancement exercises into your normal routine is fairly simple and the benefits are enormous. They can help with problems ranging from weak erections and impotence to premature ejaculation. Ultimately they work to enhance the entire sexual experience and restore confidence in your performance.

For more information on where you can learn about these techniques, please see the Penis Exercise Program Comparisons. These programs are inexpensive, safe and most importantly, effective.

While sex can and should be pleasurable, it's also a very strenuous activity. Being prepared for the experience with the best functioning equipment possible is always in your best interest.

There is an unmistakable connection between growing older and impotence. Some studies even suggest that at least one in every ten men over the age of 40 will encounter complete erectile dysfunction (i.e. they cannot achieve an erection at all). This however, does not necessarily mean older men cannot experience an active and fulfilling sex life. Understanding the factors that contribute to erectile dysfunction and finding effective impotence treatments is the key to maintaining harder and longer erections.

While impotence can affect men of all ages, it does tend to be more prevalent in the over 40 age group. In fact, it is estimated that 52% of men between the ages of 40 and 70 exhibit some degree of erectile dysfunction.

There are many causes for this problem but they all have their root in either Physiological or Psychological conditions.

Physical Causes Of Erectile Dysfunction In Older Men

Parkinson's disease

Liver or kidney failure

Brain or spinal-cord injuries

Hypogonadism (which leads to lower testosterone levels)

Stroke

Some types of prostate or bladder surgery

Testicle radiation therapy

High blood pressure

High blood sugar levels

Hardening of the arteries

Alcohol, tobacco and drug use

Certain prescription drugs that affect a man's hormones, nerves, or circulation

Fatigue

Psychological Issues Associated With Erectile Dysfunction

Being nervous about sex. This can happen because of a previous bad experience or prior episode of impotence.

Feeling stressed out. Work and family situations often create tremendous stress and cause you to lose focus.

You might be troubled by relationship problems with your partner or feel they are reacting negatively towards you.

Bouts of depression can lead to feelings of low self-esteem which effects your overall performance.

You may be so extremely self-conscious about yourself that you can't enjoy sex.

Luckily today there are a host of new treatments available for men suffering from ED. Your doctor or therapist can advise you of many options. If you decide to seek therapy, it's best if your partner is involved. As a couple you can learn new and exciting ways to please one another and reduce the anxiety caused by erection problems.

There are also alternative remedies you can explore such as natural herbal supplements. One such treatment, called Provacyl™, is especially designed for older men. It works to boost the entire body by increasing testosterone production, stimulating growth hormone and improving blood flow. This translates to not only a healthier body but also a healthier sex life. For more information, visit their website: PROVACYL

Unfortunately, erectile dysfunction is often a part of growing older. But it doesn't always need to be. It's important to take the initiative and confront the problem head on. Proactive means "sex active."

Erectile Dysfunction (ED) is defined as the inability to maintain or sustain an erection. It has been estimated that between 25 and 30 million men will encounter this problem during their lifetime. While luckily most of these cases are only temporary, erection problems are still very embarrassing and can have an extremely negative impact on both self confidence and the male ego.

Most cases of erection problems have their root in either physiological or psychological causes. Erectile dysfunction that is due to physiological reasons is usually a sign that there is some greater health concern involved such as diabetes.

In the case of psychological ED problems, the culprit is usually a lack of focus or simply the brain's inability to connect with sexual thoughts. This is often characterized by intermittent erection problems. For instance, when normal erection occurs nocturnally but sometimes it is impossible to attain a full erection during intercourse.

As mentioned above, ED is mostly a temporary condition and usually can be cured without the need for dangerous surgery or other risky measures. Often it's as simple as getting a good night's sleep! Many times men believe that they should be able to perform sexually at all times and don't give themselves adequate rest. In this case, erectile dysfunction is merely the body's way of telling you that you're over exerting yourself and need to sleep to regain energy.

Physical factors that can cause erection problems, both temporary and not, include drugs, alcohol and smoking. Some forms of prescription drugs as well as illegal drugs have been shown to cause ED. Similarly, excessive drinking and smoking is known to cause problems and should be avoided both to prevent ED as well as to maintain an overall healthy lifestyle.

One of the biggest causes of erectile dysfunction is stress. If your worried and your mind is constantly racing, you cannot concentrate on sex and your penis may not function properly. In other cases, the fear and or excitement of being with a new sexual partner may be too overwhelming. In both instances, relaxation is the key. While this may be easier said than done, guilt, worry and anxiety have no place in a healthy sexual situation and must be dealt with accordingly if the problem is to be resolved.

Additionally there are all-natural sexual aids that men can use to help treat the problem. In fact some performance enhancing gels and lotions are specifically designed to help stop erectile dysfunction. A simple topical application is often all that is needed to achieve longer lasting and firmer erections.

If you're one of the many men who is suffering or has suffered from this condition in the past, take comfort in the fact that you are not alone. It can and does happen to most men at some point in their life. You can prevent erectile dysfunction if you make a conscious effort and take the necessary steps to rid yourself of the problem.

Contrary to popular belief, the act of naturally enlarging the penis is not a new practice. In fact, archaeological evidence shows that penis enhancement dates back thousands of years in various cultures from around the world.

Recently the practice of natural penis enlargement has become much more widespread and is slowly entering the mainstream of popular culture. This development is primarily due to two events that have taken place in recent times.

The first event that helped bring penis enhancing practices into the mainstream was the creation and use of the Internet. What the Internet did, more than anything else, was to create a cloak of privacy that allowed people to discover information about things that had been previously considered taboo. While this applies to many more things than penis enlargement alone, the Internet has without a doubt proven to be an incredible resource for exploration into all aspects of male sexuality.

Not only did the Internet allow men to find tremendous amounts of information about penis enlargement, it also gave retailers a new way to reach customers. Prior to the Internet, advertisements for penis enlargement systems were basically limited to the often "creepy" back pages of sex magazines and listed alongside ads for escorts and prostitutes.

The second event that helped to increase the popularity of penis enlargement was the mainstreaming of erectile dysfunction problems. With the creation of drugs like Viagra and Cialis and successful marketing practices, men were now more likely to actually confront and address problems related to penis dysfunction. After erection problems, the next logical step was to address issues of penis size and answer question's like "I'm not happy with the size of my penis, how can I make it bigger?"

The combination of both of these events has served to bring the entire penis health movement into the public eye. Thanks to these two developments and a more open discussion of men's sexual health issues, penis enlargement is now more mainstream that ever before. Considering how much money is spent on health care in general, it's a sure bet that the penis enhancement industry will only continue to grow and evolve.

As men age, the chances of experiencing impotence become increasingly more likely. In fact, studies have shown that 1 in 3 men over the age of 50 will experience erectile dysfunction at some point. Since the risk of impotence goes up 5 percent for every year after the age of 50, the longer you live the more likely you are to experience erection problems. Here are some steps you can take to help fix erectile dysfunction.

Get Exercise Regularly

Exercising regularly will keep the heart and blood vessels healthy. If your cardiovascular system is in poor condition it becomes more and more difficult to get an erection since blood does not flow properly to the penis. It has been shown that men who get regular cardiovascular exercise can delay the onset of erection problems for up to ten years or more.

Quit Smoking

Smoking is arguably the single worst thing you can do to your body. Since it serves to constrict blood vessels and effects blood pressure, smoking contributes greatly to erectile dysfunction problems.

Eat Healthier Foods

Eating foods like fruits and vegetables, consuming less red meat and getting adequate amounts of healthy oils in your diet helps to lower your cholesterol and keep your blood vessels in good shape. Healthy blood vessels are not only responsible for delivering blood to the penis, they also provide the nitric oxide necessary for penile tissues to relax and accept the blood.

While these lifestyle changes are an excellent method to help fix erectile dysfunction, sometimes alone they are not enough to prevent it from happening. If you already eat well, exercise and do not smoke yet still experience erection problems you may want to add some penis exercises to your routine.

Kegel exercises for instance are an excellent means to increase overall penis health. These exercises can be found in most quality penis exercise programs and studies have shown them to be just as effective as Viagra at producing stronger erections.

By incorporating a penis enhancement program into your lifestyle, men can effectively increase the size of their penis while improving erection strength, quality and orgasm intensity.

There are several natural methods available to men depending upon their requirements and goals. A list of some of the best rated solutions can be found on the Top Rated Penis Enhancement Products page.

Having problems getting an erection is something that many adult men experience. In fact, nearly all men at some point in their lives have difficulty getting an erection or maintaining it.

In some cases, this is a temporary condition that will go away with little or no treatment whatsoever. Other times however, it may be an ongoing problem that can eventually damage a man's self esteem and effect the relationship he has with his partner.

Commonly known as erectile dysfunction or impotence, erection problems refer to a man's inability to achieve satisfactory erections suitable for sexual intercourse. This condition is common in about 25% of the male population. Men who most often experience repeated impotence tend to be of middle age.

Thought once to be purely psychological in nature, doctors now agree that frequent erection problems are often the result of certain physical factors. Aging is the most common cause as the decrease in male hormones plays a significant role in erectile dysfunction. A percentage of men also experience this type of problem due to disease or from a combination of psychological and physical conditions.

Over the last few years, the medical community has been committed to finding solutions to erectile dysfunction problems through a wide range of mechanical, surgical and medicinal treatments.

When erection problems occur frequently, the first step in treatment is of course physical examination. This is done to rule out injury, side effects from medicine or diseases and disorders such as diabetes, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, kidney disease, alcoholism, or multiple sclerosis.

A considerable part of this evaluation includes a detailed patient history which gives the doctor important insight into the patient's health and the severity of the condition. Treatments are tailored to the individual, with the severity and cause taken into consideration. Some common treatments include medications, vacuum pump devices and surgery.

Some commonly prescribed medications to treat erectile dysfunction include Viagra, Levitra, and Cialis. For men wishing to go the natural route, non-prescription herbal enlargement supplements are often substituted.

Vacuum pumps fall under the category of "mechanical" treatments. These devices are cylinders worn over the penis and air is pumped from the chamber to create a vacuum space around it. This causes blood to be drawn into the penis, thereby engorging it and causing an erection.

Surgery is sometimes performed in order to restore blood flow to the penile area if the blood vessels are damaged. Surgery is a risky business however, due to the possibility of infection during the procedure.

Psychotherapy and behavior alteration are also sometimes prescribed to help alleviate erectile dysfunction. These types of treatments work to target the psychological factors that may be causing the disorder.

So how do you know if it's a real problem for you? If you have difficulty getting an erection and keeping it for over 25% of the time, then it is a problem. Luckily there are many types of treatments available, including those outlined above, that can help in the treatment of erection problems. Always be sure to consult your physician first.

For a man, achieving and maintaining a solid erection is a vital component of a healthy sex life. Unfortunately, many men often experience difficulties when it comes to achieving an erection. But what are some of the reasons why men experience erection failure and diminished libido? Here I will discuss three factors that often contribute to erectile problems which can lead to sexual performance issues. We will also look at some possible solutions and remedies to this common problem.

Smoking

While everyone knows that smoking is unhealthy, most men don't realize that it can also have a negative effect on their sex life. Over time, smoking causes vascular (blood flow) damage which can lead to problems attaining erections. Luckily, most men rapidly recover lost sexual and erectile functioning by simply quitting smoking. There have been numerous studies done where men who had experienced erection loss prior to orgasm recovered proper erection functioning completely after only a short period of not smoking.

Of course as any smoker can tell you, quitting is easier said then done. Nicotine is a highly addictive substance and it requires a strong commitment and dedication to kick the habit. While cessation is clearly the best option, men can also use specific products designed to counteract smokings effect on blood flow. Natural enhancement supplements can help to strengthen the vascular system, making improvements in blood flow that can significantly improve penile performance.

Excessive Alcohol Use

While alcohol isn't necessarily bad for your health, excessive drinking can lead to sexual problems over the long term. Not only can it impair the proper functioning of the penis, alcohol abuse can also lower normal testosterone levels in men which will affect overall sexual performance and sex drive.

If you are a regular drinker and often experience erection failure then the first step is to cut back on the amount you drink. If this doesn't help then you may need to stop drinking completely in order to regain normal performance. As suggested above, using a high quality vascular enhancing herbal supplement can also help boost testosterone production and increase sex drive.

Prescription and Non-prescription Drug Use

Several prescription, non-prescription, and recreational drugs can cause sexual issues like impotence. Drugs for treating hypertension, anti-depressants, sedatives, SSRI's (Selective Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitors) such as Prozac, and beta-blockers (heart medications) have all been connected to cases of impotence and loss of libido.

There are many other physical causes of sexual problems beyond those mentioned above. For example, impotence can result from illnesses such as diabetes, Parkinson's disease, or other conditions beyond a patient's control. Luckily, there are several avenues of help available to men with erection problems.

Most legitimate natural herbal products contain several different and highly potent plant extracts used for treatment of sexual problems. These ingredients have a beneficial effect on many aspects of the male reproductive system and often have their basis in folk medicine and ancient remedies. Plant extracts have been used for centuries to help people recover lost libido and penile function without the often negative side effects of modern drugs. Today, these same herbals are available with the added benefits of medical grade dosing and encapsulation technology, making their effects more reliable and effective than ever.

Because most naturopathic supplements can be taken along with other medications, there are few known issues when using these products to improve libido and erection quality along with other treatments. Be sure to check with your physician first to insure that the ingredients are safe to use with any other medications you may be taking at the same time.

Keep in mind that if you are using any medications and experiencing sexual side effects this does not mean you should stop taking your medication. These were prescribed to you by your physician for a reason. If you think you might be having sexual difficulties due to a drug you are taking then discuss it with your doctor, who can change your treatment as needed.
