This months issue of Men's Health magazine includes a rather interesting article concerning Peyronie's disease, a medical condition that may affect up to 25 million men in the United States alone. The author of the article having been diagnosed with the affliction commonly described as "bent penis" tells of his experience in dealing with various treatments. One particular method however, namely that of using a penile traction device to naturally correct penis curvature, is conspicuously absent from recommended treatments.

"Recommended Treatment"

Upon discovering that he suffered from Peyronie's disease, the author of the article, Bill, did what most men would do – he immediately scheduled an appointment with his doctor. He was then referred to a urologist said to specialize in Peyronie's disease. The medical treatment options laid out for him included the following:

Verapamil Injections
A technique of injecting a drug called verapamil directly into the penis shaft. This is meant to break down the accumulation of plaque responsible for the unusual curvature of the penis.

Downside: Results are spotty at best and the injections are very painful.

Corporal Plication
A surgical operation in which two permanent sutures are embedded in the lining of the penis. These sutures are placed opposite to the curvature as a way of straightening the penile shaft.

Downside: Can result in a shortening of the penis.

Patch Corporoplasty
This procedure involves cutting the plaque into two sections by making an incision through the thickest part of the buildup. Once the curved section is divided, the incision is then patched together with a skin graft.

Downside: A chance of developing erectile dysfunction if the nerves or tissues are damaged during the surgery.

Bill elected to use the first method involving verapamil injections. After this treatment failed he then proceeded to the surgical option involving corporal plication. After 5 hours of surgery and a month of recovery, Bill's penis was once again free from curvature.

Natural Penile Traction

I found it a bit curious that a non-surgical and non-invasive method such as penis traction was not referenced. This particular method has not only demonstrated favorable results in numerous clinical studies, it's also been shown to increase the size of the penis, a more than favorable result in itself.

So why was this technique not mentioned as an alternative to these risky and often unsuccessful methods? Is it not a physician's obligation to his patient to reveal every manner of available treatment?

Maybe it's because a treatment that doesn't require medical intervention (or expensive health insurance) is somehow frowned upon by doctors. God-forbid there might be a solution to Peyronie's disease that doesn't involve cutting open a man's penis or injecting painful needles!

Perhaps it's because society as a whole has come to rely on the medical community as the most convenient response to health issues. We want our problems fixed immediately, regardless of the potential dangers involved. For those seeking immediate gratification, solutions such as penile traction which might take several months for results are simply too "troublesome."

Cautious Decision Making

I've always thought of surgery as a last resort, something to be considered only after all other resources have been exhausted. This same principal holds true for penis enlargement surgery. The inherent risks involved with surgical penis augmentation, not to mention the enormous costs, makes this the least desirable option.

I personally subscribe to a philosophy of safety first. Whether your goal is to fix a bent penis or increase your length and girth, choosing a method that doesn't put your health in danger should be foremost in your decision making. Penis traction devices may not provide immediate results but they do get the job done. And in the end, finishing the race first isn't nearly as important as finishing safely.

This data represents usage of the FastSize extender device between the months of February and September 2009 for a total of 8 consecutive months. Of particular note in this penis extender trial was the subjects desire to not only increase the size of his penis but also correct a pre-existing condition of moderate penile curvature, goals which were both satisfactorily met.

While the total amount of growth achieved from use of the FastSize Extender falls short when compared to other comparable devices (see Penis Extender Trial Results), the user still reported extreme satisfaction with his results.

As previously mentioned, usage of the FastSize Extender was initiated with the intention of both increasing penis size as well as straightening the penile shaft. It is in this latter regard in which the user expressed the greatest gratification.

Although it is clearly not the most popular reason for using such devices, clinical studies have shown evidence that penis extenders can be effective in treating penile curvature. The subject in this trial confirms those findings and reports a significant improvement in his condition. The presence of penile curvature might also explain the unusual lack of growth in girth for the first few months of use.

FastSize Peyronie's Package

The specific product used in this trial was the FastSize Peyronie's Package. It is geared towards those men seeking penis curvature reduction in addition to increasing penis size. This package includes the following components:

A Phase II Prospective Study regarding the effectiveness of penis extender devices has been completed and the results published in the Journal of Sexual Medicine. Researchers conducted this test to confirm findings obtained from previous pilot studies suggesting that tension forces exerted by penis extenders helped reduce the curvature associated with Peyronie's disease. Results are consistent with earlier trials in exhibiting improvements in both straightening of the penis as well as increasing penile size.

As reported in an earlier penis extender study, the use of traction to both reduce penile curvature and increase the size of the penis itself has been gaining ground, most notably within the medical community itself. This latest study was conducted through the combined efforts of researchers from the Universities of Torino and Florence and Silicato and Noale Hospitals in Italy. Fifteen patients exhibiting signs of Peyronie's disease were observed over a 6 month period.

Phase II Study Results

"Penile curvature decreased from an average of 31° to 27° at 6 months without reaching the effect size (P = 0.056). Mean stretched and flaccid penile length increased by 1.3 and 0.83 cm, respectively at 6 months. Results were maintained at 12 months.†"

Study Conclusions

"…the use of a penile extender device provided only minimal improvements in penile curvature but a reasonable level of patient satisfaction, probably attributable to increased penile length. The selection of patients with a stabilized disease, a penile curvature not exceeding 50°, and no severe ED may have led to outcomes underestimating the potential efficacy of the treatment.†"

Source:† Journal of Sexual Medicine / DOI 10.1111/j.1743-6109.2008.01108.x

While the amount of curvature correction was less than anticipated, it should be noted that even the researchers themselves felt the study may have been influenced by specific correlating factors. What we should take away from this study is that there was in fact a measured decrease in curvature which did not require any injections or invasive surgical procedures. Additional intensive studies are certain to follow.

Moreover, as emphasized by my use of bolding above, an actual increase in penis size itself was observed among patients. Although this type of "secondary result" doesn't appear to overly excite the researchers, we should keep in mind that it wasn't within the aim of this particular study. Nor should they be concerned with how much a man's penis increases in size when their primary concern is in finding treatment for a pre-existing and often debilitating medical condition. It is however, a finding that is markedly important for those men wishing to increase the size of their penis using natural methods.

The Increasing Popularity of Penis Extenders

Penis extenders are slowly but surely emerging as a viable treatment for men. That they would receive any sort of recognition, let alone garner scientific research, is something I'm sure nobody would have predicted… except for perhaps the makers of the devices themselves. One doesn't offer a full 6 month money back guarantee, such as SizeGenetics does, if they weren't certain of the effectiveness of their product! One thing I'm certain of is that this little-known and now scientifically proven method of penis enlargement isn't going to remain obscure for too much longer.

A pilot study recently published in the Journal of Sexual Medicine has proven the validity of penile traction for both the treatment of penile curvature and penis size enlargement. The aim of the study was to evaluate prolonged external penile traction as a nonsurgical therapy for Peyronie's Disease, a fibrotic disorder resulting in an abnormal curve in the penis. Preliminary results indicate that not only do penis extenders effectively straighten the penis, the use of such devices also results in a notable increase in both the thickness and length of the penis itself.

Men suffering from a bend in the penis have a reason to rejoice. Prior to these findings, the only known reliable treatment for this disorder was through surgery.

Perhaps even more exciting, the use of penis traction devices has shown to actually increase penis size. Those unhappy with their current measurement can now effectively enlarge their penis through the use of such devices from the privacy of their own home.

Background of the Study

The study was conducted between researchers from the Department of Urology at Rush University Medical Center in Chicago, IL and the Medway Research Institute in North Augusta, SC. A group of ten men suffering from Peyronies Disease, most having failed prior medical therapy, participated in the study while using the penis extender device from FastSize. Traction force applied by the device was used as the only treatment for 2-8 hours per day for a period of 6 months.

Results of Penile Traction Therapy

"Subjectively all men noted reduced curvature estimated at 10–40 degrees, increased penile length (1–2.5 cm) and enhanced girth in areas of indentation or narrowing. Objective measures demonstrated reduced curvature in all men from 10–45 degrees; average reduction for the group was 33% (51–34 degrees). SPL increased 0.5–2.0 cm and erect girth increased 0.5–1.0 cm with correction of hinge effect in four out of four men."

Documented Scientific Evidence

Finally we have some irrefutable proof that natural penis enlargement can and does work! Of course I don't expect that the mainstream media will be reporting on this anytime soon. Aside from the occasional talk show or magazine article, news regarding these types of devices is particularly sparse. It's almost as if there's a silent conspiracy to keep important information such as this 'under wraps' while the pharmaceutical industries and plastic surgeons continue to reap huge profits.

For those detractors that say an additional 1 inch in length and almost 1/2 inch in thickness is insignificant, I can only say that perhaps it is to YOU. There are plenty of men out there that would be overjoyed to learn that they can improve the size of their penis through natural means.

It should also be noted that this study involved only the use of a penis extender by itself. It did not combine the treatment with a highly effective penis exercise program as is common with some of the more complete penis enlargement solutions such as SizeGenetics. Men who have used both methods in conjunction have reported gains of up to several inches in size.

In the meantime, we will continue to report and research the latest findings in natural penis enlargement and bring that information to our readers. To paraphrase the words of former astronaut Neil Armstrong, "this is one small step for man, one giant leap for mankind!"

Peyronie's disease, more commonly known as penile curvature, is a condition characterized by an abnormal or exaggerated bend in the penis. While there are surgical solutions to correct this condition, most notably the "Nesbit Procedure", many men are unwilling to undergo this type of treatment due to a shortening of the penis length that generally accompanies it. One of the newer and more advanced surgical methods for treating this condition is through the use of penile tissue grafts.

This type of procedure involves the complete surgical removal of the lump of plaque that develops on the penis due to Peyronie's and is designed to help straighten the penis in order to bring it back to its original shape. This approach is often recommended to patients who have large plaque deposits and severely bent penises. In this procedure, a surgeon removes the affected part of the Tunica Albuginea and replaces the plaque with a graft material of some type.

There are several different types of grafts that can be used to replace lost tissue. The first type is autograft tissue, which is tissue taken from the patient's own body during surgery. This is done to minimize the immunologic response to the graft and to ensure that the patient's body does not reject it.

Surgeons can also use synthetic inert substances, such as Dacron mesh or GORE-TEX instead of living tissue. Unfortunately, these artificial compounds tend to cause more scarring and also fibrosis, which is the formation of excessive connective tissue on the penis.

In some cases, doctors can use xenografts, which are foreign tissues, of human or animal origin. While these are widely available in hospitals, they are also prone to rejection by the body's immune system.

One common problem associated with penile surgical procedures to correct Peyronie's disease is a post-operative contraction that leads to a shortening of penis length. Because of this, it is wise for potential recipients to weigh the pros and cons of these types of surgery before undergoing it.

Another type of treatment for men suffering from Peyronie's disease is penile implants. While penile implants were once a popular recommendation for those suffering from erectile dysfunction, the advent of drugs to treat this condition has made their use less frequent. Implants, however, are still recommended by some physicians to those suffering from extreme curvature and for whom drugs do not help.

Penile implants are plastic cylinders, either solid or inflatable, which are surgically embedded within the Corpora Cavernosa. These cylinders are biocompatible in order to avoid triggering a response of the immune system which causes the body to reject the implants. The surgeon can either place the implants inside the penis and let them do the work of straightening the organ, or they can try to bend the penis against the plaque in order to increase the implants chance of successfully correcting the curvature.

Patients considering these types of invasive procedures should always be cautious. Premature or inadequate surgery has a high rate of failure and recurrence of the disease is possible. While it is true that patients who have undergone successful surgery are usually satisfied with the results, it only takes a single mistake to botch an operation. With penis surgery, there is no going back.

The vast majority of men grow up to experience the pleasures of normal sex, never thinking about or being concerned with the shape of their penises. Some men however are not so fortunate and find themselves unpleasantly surprised by the formation of scar tissue and a resulting bend in their penis. This condition is known to health care professionals as Peyronie's disease and is believed to exist in about 1 percent of all men.

Peyronie's disease was named after the surgeon to Louis XIV of France, Francois De la Peyronie. De La Peyronie is believed to be the first person to prescribe a treatment for this condition in 1743. The mechanism behind this disease is fairly well understood even though its root causes are not.

For reasons unknown, although many believe intercourse trauma may be associated, scar tissue begins to form in the "tunica albuginea" region of the penis. The tunica albuginea is the tough layer of connective tissue that contains the sponge-like Corpora Cavernosa. The resulting scar tissue prevents the normal expansion of the penis during erections and will, in time, bend the penis to one side or the other.

Sometimes when the condition first develops there is pain associated with it. Usually this pain will go away on its own without any need for treatment. The only lasting effects of this disease are normally the resulting penile curvature which is mostly visible in the erect state and a possible shortening of the penis in the flaccid state.

Most men suffering from Peyronie's disease are perfectly capable of having sex and do not experience pain during intercourse. The disease can affect men of all races and ages, but is most commonly seen in white males aged 40 and up. It is not contagious and is in no way related to cancer, sexually transmitted disease or any other serious condition.

While a diagnoses of Peyronie's disease is quite simple to make, unfortunately treatment for it is not. If you are suffering from this condition you should consult a urologist who specializes in this disease. Some possible treatments include pharmaceutical drugs containing L-arginine and sildenafil and in severe cases surgery may be recommended.

Peyronie's disease, characterized by an abnormal and sometimes painful bend in the penis, is a condition that has probably been around for centuries if not longer. Much like erectile dysfunction and other intimate male problems, this condition is not usually discussed openly out of embarrassment and primarily due to its private nature. A natural fear of sexually transmitted diseases and impotence led most to frown upon intimate diseases and there was little or no understanding of these illnesses and their causes.

Although the first person to make mention of this ailment was Cesare Aranzi in 1587, the name of the disease itself is still linked to Francois Gigot De la Peyronie, the man who created the first clinical reports on this condition more than 250 years ago. De la Peyronie was one of the most brilliant surgeons of his time and one of the founders of the Royal Academy of Surgery in France. His work on penile curvature included the first and, for a very long time, the only steps towards finding a cure. Sadly we are no closer to a comprehensive definition of the causes of Peyronie's disease than Peyronie himself was in 1743.

While still unproven, most doctors agree with the assumption that Peyronie's disease is caused by microvascular trauma occurring during intercourse. Because the tunica albuginea, or the layer of the penis where this condition develops, is not rich in blood vessels, the natural healing process does not always repair the damage. Repeated instances of intercourse trauma combined with poor healing can lead to the formation of a plaque (fibrin), a protein that helps blood clot. This accumulation of plaque prevents the normal expansion of penis tissues during erection, thus causing the characteristic bend.

It is also generally believed that the disease develops only in men who are genetically predisposed to the accumulation of fibrin within the tunica albuginea. In these men the plaque will further expand to the healthy tissues along the dorsal and ventral mid line of the shaft.

Even though many doctors prescribe to the above etiological progression, it should be noted that much of this is still speculation at best. Peyronie's disease is considered a rare and non-life-threatening disease and unfortunately only a handful of professionals are actually interested in uncovering the causes and finding a cure.
