Sexually transmitted diseases (STDs), also often called "sexually transmitted infections" or STIs, are infectious diseases transmitted through sexual contact. While the absolute best way to prevent contracting an STD is to abstain from any type of sexual intercourse, there are several precautionary measures you can follow to help reduce the risk of developing a sexually transmitted disease. The following practices are recommended by the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases.
