About Penile Curvature/Peyronie's Disease

Penile Curvature or Peyronie's Disease is an abnormal bend in the penis that occurs during erection. A man with Peyronie's Disease has hardened or calcified tissues in his penis causing restriction and preventing the penis from expanding during an erection. This condition results in a curvature at that point of restriction and is often very painful.

Although this is not a life-threatening condition, it can effectively kill your sex life!

Nearly 3 percent of the entire male population is estimated to be afflicted with Peyronie's Disease. It usually occurs between the ages of 45 and 60, though it can also occur in men as young as 18.

Symptoms Of Peyronies Disease

  • Painful erections making intercourse difficult or impossible.
  • Noticeable bend or arc in the penis with erection.
  • Noticeable narrowing of the diameter of the penis with erection.
  • Thick band of hard tissue within the penis.

The exact cause of penile curvature is unknown but many researchers believe that the plaque of Peyronie's Disease develops following trauma (hitting or bending) or vigorous sexual activity that causes localized bleeding inside the penis. Others trace it to diabetes, circulatory disorders, or genetics.

Treatment For Penile Curvature

Many men with Peyronie's Disease do not need any treatment at all. The disease sometimes clears up by itself, although it may take several years. Other men, however, do need treatment.

There are several drug treatments for those suffering from Peyronie's Disease. These treatments include Vitamin E or B-complex applications, steroid and calcium channel blocker injections, and radiation therapy. These methods are however mainly for the reduction of pain associated with the condition. The most well known treatment for the disease involves a surgical procedure.

Corrective Penis Surgery

Because Peyronie's disease differs so much between individuals, it is wise to adopt a conservative approach to treatment and avoid early surgical intervention. Surgery should only be considered for men who have had this disease for at least a year and have not shown any change in the condition whatsoever for at least three months. If the disease has not stabilised and become inactive before surgery is attempted, the condition can continue to progress even after the operation has been performed.

Reasons For Penile Surgery

  • Extreme difficulty with penetration during sex.
  • Pain and discomfort during sex for either partner because of the penile deformity.

Unless you are experiencing severe psychological distress, having the surgery performed because you are not happy with the appearance of your penis is not really a good reason.

Although a certain amount of correction is to be expected, there are no guarantees that the penis will be perfectly straight after the surgery. Also, some men can develop erectile dysfunction and possible numbness of the penis after surgery. As with all surgery, this is not a treatment to consider lightly without knowing all the dangers involved.

Alternative Treatments For Penile Curvature

If you notice a slight bend or arc in your penis during erection, you should take immediate action before it worsens. The condition is typically progressive and can lead to impotence or the inability to have intercourse. The Peyronies penis traction device can provide help for this condition.

Penis Straightening Without Surgery

Through a combination of exercise and the traction device method, the penis cells are trained and exercised naturally thereby increasing their elasticity and resulting in reduced or eliminated curvature. The constant, permanent stretch to the cells of the penis will strengthen the penile tissues and reduce the likelihood of scarring resulting from Peyronie's Disease.
